Currently a One-Man show with the ambition to grow!

Welcome to the AruData BV website. I’m Emile Kelkboom, founder of AruData since June 2022. Born in Aruba, it didn’t take me too long to go for the name AruData for my very first company. After working for almost 18 years for the companies Philips Research, Ordina, and DataStories, I decided to spread my wings and taste the world of freelancing. Herewith, you can find a small biography of me. Hopefully this page won’t stay too long about me only, but will be extended by others joining AruData!

Personality and Ambitions

I’m a father of 3 amazing kids (2 girls and a boy). It is great to see them grow and learn! (The real intelligence and not AI). I’m a strong analytical person with a critical eye and attention for detail, who is always looking for ways of improvement or optimization. I have a hands-on approach with a passion for efficiency and effectiveness. Furthermore, I have a strong sense of responsibility and commitment. My communication skills are open and direct. In conclusion, I’m a broadly interested person who likes to be challenged by tackling new and complex problems, work in a team, take responsibility, and is eager to win.

I have too many hobbies. Although my time has been limited since the divorce, I am currently focusing on dancing salsa, bachata, and kizomba. I have resumed bowling but have not matched my previous high score of 278, and I continue to practice piano. Playing board games and watching movies remain part of my routine, though less frequently. I intend to start mountain biking, play the guitar, and use my RC cars, helicopter, and complete the airplane. I also hope to have a motorbike again soon.

My ambition is to help companies to be more data-driven. I enjoy the challenge of having the data and trying to extract robust and meaningful information out of it, followed with the opportunity to share the findings with all the stakeholders.

Of all the different type of projects that I have worked on, the most interesting ones where the ones of optimizing production processes and the predictive maintenance ones. Therefore, the focus is on the areas of production lines optimization and predictive maintenance.

Work experience; PhD in Biometrics Data; MSc in Electrical & Control engineering

I obtained my MSc at the Technical University of Delft (TUDelft) in the Netherlands in 2004 on the topic of robust control of the lateral movement of an airplane. After working a bit less than 2 years at Philips Semiconductor on optimizing the laser power for optimal writing properties for CD and DVD players, I started my PhD at the University of Twente in 2006 while working at Information and System Security department at Philips Research. After a successful defense in 2010 and winner of the European Biometrics Forum (EBF) Research Award 2009, I switched to different departments within Philips Research working on projects on predicting the energy expenditure by combining the accelerometer with the HR-rate data and predicting the hospitalization probability due to heart failure based on daily measurements of patients with edema.

After Philips, I worked for 4 years as a consultant at Ordina, where I helped with building up the data science department and worked on some of the first data science consultancy work on risk-profiling and predictive maintenance for CT systems at Philips Medical Imaging.

Hereafter, I joined the startup/scale-up company DataStories and helped to develop the platform and SDK enabling non data scientists to be able to create advanced non-linear regression models. At DataStories I had the opportunity to work more on cases of optimizing production lines, such as a cheese whipping line, a dishwash pouch line and multiple production steps within a chocolate production company.

Programming Languages and Tools

I have worked with many tools during my career, but the most recent and common ones used for data analytics are Python with the scikit learn and pandas packages, SQL (Postgresql or HP Vertica), Excel and the Microsoft Office, and the Google Workspace. Before that I also used to program in Matlab, R, RapidMiner, and Alteryx
